Our certification course for fitness nursing will soon be offered through the Certified Fitness Nurse™ Academy (CFN Academy).
(Aiming for Spring of 2012)
You do NOT need certification to begin working as a "Fitness Nurse" Actually, experience working as a fitness nurse may be required for certification. The criteria is being reviewed. (a dedicated website is www.CertifiedFitnessNurseCoach.com is being developed)
Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach
A slogan we like to repeat as a Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach is:
"You have to be healthy to lose weight (permanently); NOT lose weight to be healthy".
Which is opposite of the conventional diet and fitness industry. I heard this quote from a great endocrinologist.
If you were told that your fasting blood sugar was 119, your waist is 40, and your blood pressure is 138/86...what would you do? You are in the 'pre' category. There are over 79 million Americans who are pre-diabetic alone. Your doctor has given you 'the talk' and possibly a prescription. Who do you want to work with to help you get and stay on track?
A dietitian or traditional nutritionist (good→ but relies too much on government guidelines and old research that is still being taught today. Their scope doesn't cover BP, meds, & fitness concerns of those who have medical conditions)
Even a -
Certified Diabetes Educator - a great resource... for someone who needs their diabetes managed. We don't want them to get diabetes type 2. We want to manage their waist reduction and improve their independence. To NOT be dependent on "managing diabetes".
A personal trainer (good→ but often limited to standard weightloss exercise Cardio5-6 days a week, exhaustive weight lifting (biggest loser-type training) and sports training/performance)
(American College of Sports Medicine's EIM Exercise Is Medicine, campaign) is to get all physicians to write standard exercise prescription orders at every patient visit. Who better to carry them out than a Certified Fitness Nurse?
A Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach →covers health-related concerns, is holistic and customized (utilizing the fitness nursing assessment, when dealing with mind/body nutrition connection & fitness for each client/patient) Our focus is lowering the need for insulin in our clients. This not only halts type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and inflammation, these top growing problems, it keeps them healthy.
What's a Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach? She/he is NOT Certified Personal Trainer who happens to be a nurse.
Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach is the practice of promoting the benefits of fitness, life long waist reduction and reduction of all health-related numbers through supportive movement patterns and other integrative proven coaching techniques, to people who have pre-diabetes and inflammation. The goal of the Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach is to empower the client to exercise on their own through self-efficacy and guided support and using the minimum effective doses of exercise, diet and supplementation/medication to get the client's desired result.
A Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach is a licensed RN or LPN (nurse first) who has experience, education, a specialty in fitness. We bridge the gap between the client's medical diagnosis or potential diagnosis and their fitness solution. The role of a Certified Fitness NurseCoach™ is to assist others to exercise who have medical concerns beyond just weight gain. We are here to deal with the 'exercise casualties' of the fitness world. Particularly those with metabolic syndrome and inflammation. These two killers can be prevented and in many cases, turned around by Certified Fitness Nurse™Coaches on a mission!
We also know that skinny ≠ healthy either.
Proper specific fitness (what to do, how to do it, when to do it), increased sleep (how much sleep and water and when) and reduced grain consumption (what kind of grains, how long, how much) and increased self-concept = healthy
We give the client the practical, specific steps to get a smaller waistline and how to feel better as quickly, as minimally and as healthfully as possible; not just the conceptual conventional wisdom that they hear from everyone, everywhere:
Which is = eat more whole grains, eat less fat, do more cardio and drink water.
We don't follow that path; we, as Certified Fitness Nurses™ even challenge that route and offer a more exciting, specific, (yet the client can become less regimented naturally by week 2), solution for the client/patient and the frustrated physician/healthcare professional.
The Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach is for the RN or LPN who buys into our philosophy that as Certified Fitness Nurse™Coaches we serve our clients (our 'tribe') by collaborating with physicians and other healthcare team members to create the best fitness nursing care plan through an integrated and holistic approach. The other health care team members may be social workers who have their own practices, registered dietitians, therapists, even dentists.
As a nurse first, I want to help/reach the most (not well) people as possible. The research has shown that the best, quickest and safest way to help people reduce their inflammation, lose their belly fat and reduce their risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer is to dramatically reduce their grain intake, increase their exercise and increase their sleep. These will be the priniciple areas of the Certified Fitness Nurse™Coaching curriculum* This course is to be offered via the internet for certification. (Spring 2012). For more information please CLICK HERE.
This certification is not just to help people lose weight... it's to help them heal. They have been pumping out too much insulin and being dependent on fitness pros and dieting for way too long.
The 6-module certification course will provide you with an 3, 6 and/or 12-month comprehensive, easy to implement, program that you can offer to physician's practices, other healthcare professionals, special populations and to your own clients. Individuals, providers and facilities are your customers. It's like your own "Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach in a Box", everything you need to get started making money as a Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach
Written examination required), dates TBA.
In order to qualify for this Certified Fitness Nurse™Coaching course:
You must be a licensed RN or LPN
Fitness education, fitness enthusiast, personal weight & health struggle counts!
You must be certified in CPR
Show proof of working as a fitness nurse, business card, letterhead, website, blog, etc.
This is a private certification program.
You do not have to be 'certified' as of yet to work as a Fitness Nurse. This, of course, may change.
*If you do not 'buy into' the curriculum, (ie - you believe in a vegan lifestyle, you believe in exercising 5-6 days a week, typical 'gym rat' lifestyle, Power 90X...etc., than this certification program may not be for you) This program is specifically designed for the nurse/exercise enthusiast who wants to heal people first; lose weight second. And you will be attempting to help your clients stay well and not regain their weight or waist size. Which is what typically happens with conventional exercise and diet programs. As soon as they quit the "usage" of exercising 6 days a week (because they're injured) and eating no fat, low fat foods, most humans just can't sustain, they of course start going back the other way, gaining weight and getting 'unhealthy' again. Also mental changes occur. Did you know that depressed women have weaker bones? This certification program is to teach you how to help people who need to heal, the quickest, safest and most sustainable way possible, with the physician's referral and full support. A Certified Fitness Nurse™Coach empowers clients; not create dependency.
*You can still work as a Fitness Nurse, under your beliefs. But you will not be considered "certified" under this organization's criteria if you choose to change any of the nutritional guidelines and exercise patterns from what we feel is the best way all nurses, who want to become certified, can help the most people.
Please keep in mind that as Certified Fitness Nurse™Coaches, we use our nursing training and experience and the nursing process to assess, diagnose (nursing dx), plan, implement and evaluate the needs of our clients through exercise. We will work with physicians and other health care providers (ie. post-physical therapy), possibly part of the patient care team, we create self-efficacy with exercise and healing meal plans to our clients and also to lower health related numbers, build stress resistance and elevate mood. (weight loss, of course, is considered; but it is a pleasant 'by-product', not the main focus of our exercise programming)
